Storages Creep Back Down
Melbourne’s water storages have continued to steadily decline after a week of below average rainfall and streamflows.
Storages decreased by 0.2% of capacity (3.1 billion litres) in the past week. Storages are now 34.7% (614.8 billion litres) full, compared with 38.6% (683.9 billion litres) at the same time last year.
The drop came after 11mm of rain fell over the major catchments, compared with the long-term average of 18mm for the period.
Although the rainfall was modest, the catchments were still feeling the benefits of the heavy downpours late last year.
As a result, the rain converted into 4.8 billion litres of streamflows, but runoff was still 23% below the average for the period.
The cool weather kept residential consumption down, with Melbournians using an average of 143 litres per person per day below the target of 155 litres a day. This week’s total water consumption across all uses averaged 1013 million litres a day.
More information on restrictions and tips on how to reach the target are available from Target 155 Open this link in new window or by contacting the government water retailers.
Stage 3a restrictions and Target 155 are currently in place. |

It takes approximately 15 minutes to deliver just one liter of water to the soil with drip irrigation, compared to five seconds when hand watering?
Most plants will flourish on a 25 - 30 min dripper watering twice a week.
Installing a Moisture sensor can save up to 50% of your required irrigation water needs. |
